History -
In 1874 Efstathios Lampsas bought the mansion and with a staggering 800,000 drachma loan turned it into the GB. In 1941 the Nazis invaded Greece and made the hotel their headquarters.
After the war there was more unrest as civl war broke out between the Communists and the Greek Army. The hotel housed the refugees as well as hosting talks between George Papandreou and Winston Churchill.
In 1974 Constantine Karamanlis spent 4 months forming a new government from his 5th floor suite.
In the same year Archbishop Makarios addressed the Greek people from a 2nd floor balcony after an assanation attempt on him and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
