The Hotel was built before the suburb. The idea was people could stay here while they were looking at land. The hotel was painted pink in 1948. Major refurbishment from 1992 to 1995 for US$100 million

In 1987 the Sultan of Brunei biught the hotel for 185 million. The previous owner had it for a year and sold it for US$49 million more than he paid for it. In 2013 the Sultan advised he was adopting the brutal and anachronistic Shariah law in Brunei.
This caused many cancellations in his hotels and the boycott went viral around the world. In 2014 Elton John, Ellen and Jay Leno called for a boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel. The city council also urged the Sultan to sell all of his Beverly Hill properties. Despite many eager buyers the hotel is still part of the Sultan's Dorchester Collection
