  • Sinulog

Dubbed as the biggest and grandest festival in the Philippines, the Sinulog Festival is attended by people from around the world and from across the country. This major festival in Cebu City starts generally 9 days before the third Sunday in January. So if you want to be there for it you will need to get your hotel bookings in 6 - 8 months before-hand. If you don't want to make your bookings 6 - 8 months beforehand you will need to book around the dates of the festival.

  • Visa Strategy

You can apply for the 6-month Long Stay Visitor Visa Extension (LSVVE) in Cebu City.

While the program was originally restricted to the Manila main office, it is now widely available at major district offices, including Cebu. This is a great option because it allows you to handle everything in one single transaction rather than returning every month or two.

  • If you stay under 6 months you will avoid all of the hassle of having to get an ECC before you leave. More info on this in the relative locations.

  • As this is designed as an extended time trip the number of nights in each place is a guide only. If you like a place - stay - if you're bored - move on.

Where to go in Cebu MAP

As of early 2024, the primary office for visa extensions has moved.

  • Office: Bureau of Immigration – Cebu District Office

  • Location: 2nd Floor, GMall of Cebu (A. Soriano Ave, North Reclamation Area).

  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 7:30 PM.

  • Note: Many older guides still list J Centre Mall or Robinsons Galleria; avoid these as the office has relocated to GMall.

Breakdown for the 6-Month Option

For a non-visa required national, the 6-month extension is a "bundled" fee.

LSVVE Fee (6 Months) + AUDACR I-Card Fee. It's not cheap but you will have a hassle free 6 months and it's not the dearest visa fees around either.

Important Steps for your 5 - 6 Month Stay

  1. Arrival (Day 1) - Enter on your free 30-day stamp.

  2. The Cebu Visit (Around Day 20) - Go to the GMall office. Instead of asking for a small extension, tell them you want the 6-month LSVVE.

  3. The Result - They will process your 29-day waiver AND the 6-month extension simultaneously. You will also be fingerprinted for your ACR I-Card (required for stays over 59 days).

  4. The Benefit - You won't have to visit an immigration office again for the rest of your trip.

  5. Leaving (Month 5 - 6) - Because you haven't stayed longer than 6 months you do not need an Exit Clearance (ECC). However, if your plans change and you stay past 6 months, you must return to the BI office for an ECC at least one week before flying out.

What to Bring to GMall

  • Passport (original + photocopy of bio page and latest entry stamp).

  • 2 passport photos. There are photo booths inside the mall if you forget.

  • Black Pen (for the forms).

  • Cash (PHP) - They generally do not accept Australian or Philippine credit cards. Have AUD$500 cash with you and you will get some change. But not much.☹️

The "Big Three" Apps

  • Grab - the best all-in-one app.
Private cars (GrabCar), metered taxis (GrabTaxi), and 6-seater vehicles for groups.
Pros - Best availability, upfront pricing (except for tolls) and easy credit card / GrabPay integration.
Wide coverage including Manila, Cavite (Dasmariñas/Tagaytay area), and other major cities.

  • JoyRide - Originally a motorcycle app, it has expanded into a full Superapp.
Services - Private cars (JoyRide Car), motorcycle taxis and even bus bookings.
Pros - Often slightly cheaper than Grab and a great backup if Grab has long wait times.

  • inDrive - A unique peer-to-peer app where you negotiate the fare.
How it works - You offer a price for your trip, and drivers can accept, decline, or counter-offer.
Pros - Can be much cheaper for long-distance trips (like Manila to Tagaytay) because you aren't subject to "surge" pricing.

Gateway to the Visayas

Transport

Mactan-Cebu International Airport

has direct flights to 46 destinations in 14 countries and 28 domestic flights. These include the major Asian connections plus Brisbane, Doha and Dubai.

About

Mactan Island's history is defined by a pivotal event in 1521- the Battle of Mactan.

Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, leading a Spanish expedition to circumnavigate the globe, arrived in the Philippine archipelago in March 1521. After forming an alliance and converting local leader Rajah Humabon of Cebu to Christianity, Magellan sought to assert Spanish authority over the neighboring island of Mactan.

The local chieftain Lapu-Lapu, fiercely refused to submit to Spanish rule or pay tribute, becoming the sole native leader to openly defy Magellan.

On the morning of April 27, 1521, Magellan led a small force of Spanish soldiers to Mactan's shores to subdue Lapu-Lapu. Due to shallow waters and coral reefs, the Spanish ships couldn't bring their cannon to bear, forcing Magellan's men to wade ashore.

Lapu-Lapu’s warriors, estimated at around 1,500, overwhelmed the smaller, heavily armored Spanish contingent with a torrent of spears and arrows. Magellan was killed during the chaotic retreat, marking the end of his attempt to claim Mactan.

Lapu-Lapu's victory cemented his legacy as the first Filipino hero to successfully resist foreign domination, delaying Spanish colonization of the Philippines by over four decades. The Mactan Shrine today commemorates both Magellan's death and Lapu-Lapu's valor.

  • Mactan is the hand-crafted guitar capital of the Philippines. Factories and workshops on the island are renowned for producing high-quality guitars, ukuleles, and other musical instruments, which are sold worldwide.

  • Every year, the island celebrates the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Victory in Mactan) festival on April 27th, featuring a vibrant and dramatic reenactment of the famous battle between Lapu-Lapu's forces and Magellan's troops.

BUS & BOAT

Time Approx. 6–7 hours

1. Mactan Island to Cebu North Bus Terminal -

Taxi or GrabCar 30 – 60 minutes, depending on traffic.

2. Cebu North Bus Terminal to Maya Port -

OR

Take a pre-booked Private Car / Van or Negotiated Taxi which will take 4 - 5 hours to get to the port. There are also private boats available which will leave straight away.

About

📜 History and Name

  • The island's name, Malapascua, is derived from the Spanish words "mal" (bad) and "Pascua" (Passover - Christmas or Easter). Legend has it that Spanish explorers were stranded on the island due to a major storm on either Christmas Day or Easter Day in the 1500s. The locals, however, call the island Logon.

  • Historically, the local population relied primarily on subsistence fishing and boat-building. Agricultural products like rice and corn were supplied from the larger neighboring islands.

  • The island was "re-discovered" by foreigners in the mid-1980s, with the first resort opening around 1990. It quickly became known as a premier destination for its stunning white-sand beaches and excellent diving.

  • In 2013, the island was devastatingly hit by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) one of the deadliest typhoons in history.  But with the help of tourism dollars, the community rebuilt and has since returned to its beautiful, laid-back charm.

What Malapascua is Most Famous For

  • Thresher Sharks. Malapascua is one of the only places in the world where divers can reliably see the elusive thresher sharks year-round. These magnificent creatures, with their long, whip-like tails, visit the nearby Monad Shoal—an underwater plateau—at sunrise to use it as a "cleaning station." This is the island's number one draw for international visitors.

World-Class Diving - beyond the thresher sharks, the island offers other notable dive sites, including

  • Gato Island - A marine reserve with caves, white-tip reef sharks, and diverse macro life.

  • Japanese Shipwrecks - Several World War II wrecks, such as the Tapilon and Pioneer, which now host vibrant marine ecosystems.

  • Pristine Beaches - The island boasts beautiful stretches of white sand and clear turquoise water. Bounty Beach is the main tourist hub, lined with resorts, dive shops, and restaurants.

  • Other notable, quieter beaches include Langub Beach and Guimbitayan Beach.

The economy is overwhelmingly driven by tourism and diving, though some locals still engage in fishing.

The island maintains a genuine village feel. Locals are friendly, and you'll find laid-back activities like beachside dining, watching the sunset, and enjoying local fiestas.

Best things to See & Do on Malapascua Island

This is the single biggest reason people visit Malapascua. It is one of the only places in the world where you can reliably see the beautiful, long-tailed thresher sharks on a daily basis.

  • You take a boat out before sunrise (around 4 am) to Monad or Kimud Shoal, an underwater seamount where the shy sharks ascend from the deep to visit "cleaning stations."

  • This dive is for Advanced Open Water certified divers due to the depth (around 30 meters). However, many dive shops offer courses or specialty dives if you are not yet certified.

🏝️ 2. Day Trip to Kalanggaman Island

 (The Postcard Island)

Located about a two-hour boat ride from Malapascua, this island is famous for its stunning, long, white sandbar stretching into crystal-clear turquoise waters.

  • Swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and taking iconic photos of the sandbar.

🏖️ The Best Beaches - MAP

Malapascua is small enough to walk or hire a motorbike/tricycle to visit several beautiful beaches.

  • Bounty Beach (The Hub) - The main stretch of white sand where most resorts, dive shops, restaurants and bars are located. It's the best spot for sunset cocktails and people-watching.

  • Langob Beach (North Beach) - A quieter, more secluded, and picturesque beach on the northern end of the island, known for its soft sand and calm, clear water, making it excellent for swimming.

  • Guimbitayan Beach - Another secluded northern beach sometimes considered a hidden gem for its tranquility.

  • Lighthouse Beach / Shipwreck Bar - A popular spot to watch the sunset and offers good snorkeling near a shallow Japanese WWII Shipwreck.

🐠 Other Must-Do Water Activities

  • Gato Island Day Trip - A marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary about an hour away. It's famous for diving/snorkeling around caves and tunnels and for seeing a huge variety of macro-marine life, including colorful nudibranchs and sea snakes.

  • Snorkeling - If you're not a certified diver you can still enjoy the water. Tours often visit shallow sites like the Japanese Shipwreck, Coral Gardens and the Dakit-Dakit Islets.

  • Experience Local Life - Take a stroll away from Bounty Beach and through the center of the island's village to see local houses, basketball courts and get a feel for the authentic, laid-back Filipino island culture.

Local Disco / Parties - locals will occasionally set up a spontaneous "local disco" on the beach, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, sometimes in front of a bar or near the village. The island is divided into three municipalities - Santa Fe (the main tourist area and port), Bantayan (the largest town, commercial center and location of the historic church) and Madridejos (in the north, known for Kota Park).

The main economy is tourism, but historically and primarily it was fishing and fish processing (especially dried fish like danggit). The island is a major source of fresh seafood for Cebu and beyond.

Transport - Map

Option 1: The Public Transport Route (Cheaper Option)

  • Estimated Travel Time - 6 to 7 hours (excluding waiting time)

Step 1 - Malapascua Island to Maya Port on a Public Outrigger Boat 30 - 45 minutes. Boats depart frequently, usually every hour. Boats typically leave when full, or at scheduled times. The last departure is generally in the late afternoon.

Step 2 - Maya Port to Hagnaya Port (Cebu Mainland) Bus or Van / Tricycle 1.5 – 2 hours. You can catch a public bus (e.g., Ceres Liner) towards Bogo City, and then transfer to Hagnaya.
Shared / Private Van or Tricycle is faster, but more expensive.

Step 3 - Hagnaya Port to Santa Fe Pier (Bantayan Island) on Roro / Car Ferry 1 – 1.5 hours. Ferries run frequently (often hourly) throughout the day. Be prepared to also pay a separate terminal fee upon arrival at Hagnaya Port.

Option 2: Direct Boat Charter (Fastest Option)

This is the fastest, most convenient, but most expensive way to travel. You hire a private boat directly between the two islands.

Estimated Travel Time - 2 to 3 hours

Estimated Total Cost - Varies widely, but it is for the entire boat which can be split among passengers.

  • You should be able to organise it with your accommodation - remember  to clearly negotiate the total price, duration and drop off location.

  • This option is highly weather-dependent. Operators will only proceed if sea conditions are safe.

  • You can rent a scooter or motorbike to easily explore the island on your own.

🏛️ History and Origin

  • The name Bantayan comes from the phrase "Bantayan sa Hari," which translates to "Watchtowers of the King."

During the reign of Governor-General Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera in the 17th century Moro pirates frequently raided the Visayas for slaves.
To defend the island 18 watchtowers (or bantayan) were built along the coast to spot the approaching vintas (Moro vessels), giving the island its enduring name.

Historical accounts suggest the island had a flourishing community even before the Spanish arrived evidenced by the discovery of pre-colonial artifacts.

The "Egg Basket" of Cebu - Bantayan is a major supplier of eggs to Cebu and the entire Visayas region. As you travel the interior roads, you will see numerous chicken and poultry farms.

The Omagieca Obo-ob Mangrove Garden with its beautiful bamboo boardwalk became a famous tourist spot after it was used as a filming location for the popular Filipino movie Camp Sawi.

The island has its own unique language / dialect called Bantayanon, which has slight variations across the three main municipalities.

The vast, open western horizon allows for an unobstructed view of the sun sinking into the Visayan Sea, often creating dramatic colors.

  • Since it's about a 30 - 45 minute motorbike or tricycle ride north from Santa Fe, it's a great destination to cap off a day of exploring the northern part of the island.

2. Kota Beach (Santa Fe) - The Most Iconic Sunset Beach

  • For visitors staying in Santa Fe, Kota Beach offers the most picturesque and accessible sunset experience, combined with the convenience of being near restaurants and bars.

  • You can watch the sunset right from the famous shifting sandbar (if the tide is right) or from the beachfront bars and restaurants like the one at Kota Beach Resort.

  • The soft white sand and the resort's iconic palm trees provide a classic tropical backdrop as the sky changes color.

Sunset with a Cocktail

  • This general stretch of coastline in Santa Fe is fantastic for combining your sunset viewing with food and drinks. Numerous resorts and beach clubs like Santa Fe Beach Club and Stumble Inn have seating right on the sand. You can grab a cocktail, enjoy a meal, and watch the show unfold without having to move.

4. Anywhere on the West Coast (Via Motorbike) -

The Hidden Gems

  • Since Bantayan is relatively flat and the entire west side faces the sunset, renting a motorbike and driving down any of the local roads toward the coast can yield a secluded, private sunset experience. Find a quiet stretch of beach away from the resorts for a tranquil, unspoiled moment.

CEBU CITY 3N - Extend your visa

Cebu City the "Queen City of the South" is a vibrant coastal metropolis and the oldest city in the Philippines. It blends deep Spanish colonial heritage with a booming modern economy, famous for its infectious energy, renowned white-sand beaches, world-class diving and the massive, colorful Sinulog Festival held every January.

History

Cebu began as a thriving pre-colonial trading hub before Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521, planting a cross and initiating the first Christian baptisms. Shortly after, Magellan was killed by chieftain Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan, a landmark of early resistance.

Spanish colonization began in earnest in 1565 under Miguel López de Legazpi, who established the first permanent settlement and mission. Cebu served as the capital until 1571. It became a chartered city in 1937 and was nearly destroyed during World War II. Since the 1990s, a massive economic boom—dubbed "Ceboom"—has transformed it into a global business and tourism powerhouse.

TRANSPORT - MAP

  1. Make your way to Santa Fe Port and take the Ferry to Hagnaya Port. Board a ferry (such as Super Shuttle Roro or Island Shipping) bound for Hagnaya Port in San Remigio on the main island of Cebu.

  • Duration: ~1.5 hours

2. Bus from Hagnaya Port to Cebu North Bus Terminal. Upon arrival at Hagnaya Port, walk to the adjacent bus station. Board a Ceres Liner bus heading south to the Cebu North Bus Terminal in Cebu City.

  • Duration: ~3 hours

VISA EXTENSION - MAP

In Cebu City, you can typically get a 6-month visa extension (technically called the Long Stay Visitor Visa Extension or LSVVE) in as little as 1 to 3 hours, depending on which office you visit and how busy they are.

While some official websites suggest a few days for processing, most travelers in Cebu experience "same-day" service if they arrive early.

  • Check your timing - You should apply for the LSVVE at least one week before your current visa expires. Because this involves a 6-month jump, the BI officers sometimes ask more questions about your financial capacity to stay that long without working locally.

Where to Go in Cebu

There are three main offices, but the mall-based ones are generally faster and more comfortable:

  1. J Centre Mall (AS Fortuna, Mandaue) - Most popular for expats. Usually very efficient; if you arrive at 9:00 AM, you are often out by 11:00 AM.

  2. GMall of Cebu (A. Soriano Ave) - A newer, often quieter office. Processing here is frequently cited as taking less than an hour.

  3. Mactan (Lapu-Lapu City) - Convenient if you are staying near the airport or resorts, though it can sometimes be busier.

Cost - AUD$500 (Including ACR I-Card) or 20,000 PHP

Requirements

  • Passport - Must be valid for at least 6 months.

  • Application Form - Available at the office (or downloadable from the BI website).

  • Sworn Statement for LSVVE - A specific affidavit required for stays exceeding 6 months, stating your purpose for staying longer (e.g., tourism, health, or business).

  • ACR I-Card (Original & Photocopy) - If you have been in the country for more than 59 days, you should already have this. If this is your first time extending past 59 days, you will apply for the card and the 6-month extension at the same time.

  • Photocopies -
    Passport bio-page.
    Latest arrival stamp.
    Latest visa extension stamp/sticker.

  • Two 2" x 2" passport photos (Official Philippino size - may not be necessary but have them anyway)

  • Dress Code - Crucial. Do not wear shorts, singlets, or flip-flops (thongs). Security may deny you entry to the Bureau of Immigration if you aren't wearing "decent" attire (pants/jeans and a T-shirt/shirt is fine).

  • Payment - Cash (Pesos) is the safest bet, as card machines in these offices are often offline.

Important: The 6-Month Exit Rule

If you are staying for 6 months, you must obtain an Emigration Clearance Certificate (ECC) before you leave the Philippines.

  • You should apply for this at the Bureau of Immigration (like the one in GMall) about 1 week before your flight.

  • It proves you have no criminal record or debts in the country. Without it, you may be blocked from boarding your flight. There are offices close to Ermita and Makati where you will be staying in Manila. Or get it here if you are flying out of Cebu.

  • If you have stayed less than 6 months you wont need to get one but you may still be charged a fee for staying longer than 59 days. So it pays to have AUD$70 ready in pesos ready at the airport for this and a head tax. 😱

SEE & DO

The "Mango to Mactan Strait" Walking Tour (Starts with Brunch) - MAP

1. START - Mango Square (General Maxilom Ave)

Start at the heart of Cebu’s entertainment district. In the morning, it's a quiet transit hub; at night, it’s neon-lit and loud.

Grab a quick coffee at a local cafe like Abaca Baking Company.

  • Head west away from the nightlife hub toward the Capitol area.

  • The Path: Walk down Gen. Maxilom Ave and turn left onto J. Llorente Street.

2. First Stop - Pungko-Pungko sa Fuente (~600m) BRUNCH

Come Hungry. Leave Fulfilled.

  • This is the ultimate 'eat like a local' experience. You sit on small benches (pungko means to squat/sit low) and pick fried delicacies from a communal tray.

  • Try -  Ngohiong (deep-fried vegetable spring roll) and Puso (hanging rice).

  • It's right across from Apple Tree Suites. It’s busy, loud, and the best way to start a Cebuano day.

3. Second Stop - Fuente Osmeña Circle (~300m)

This is the symbolic center of Cebu City. It’s a large roundabout with a central fountain built to celebrate the inauguration of the city’s water system. Apart from the historical value, Fuente Osmeña is the center of all Sinulog activities, dubbed as the biggest and grandest festival in the Philippines.

  • Exit Pungko-pungko and walk toward the main rotunda.

  • Walk the inner perimeter. It’s a great spot for people-watching and seeing the "Cebu City" signage.

  • This is a great spot to digest for a moment. If you're lucky, you might see local groups practicing for the Sinulog festival or just enjoy the central fountain.

  • Grab a coffee from the nearby Abaca Baking Company at Robinsons Cybergate.

4. The Long Walk - Osmeña Boulevard (~1.8 km)

  • Head south out of the circle onto Osmeña Boulevard.

  • You'll pass Cebu Normal University and the bustling local commerce of the "old" uptown. Grab a trike if you want to take a short cut.

5. Heritage District - Parian (~900m)

6. Spiritual Heart - Magellan’s Cross & Basilica (~600m)

  • A short walk further down into the heart of the city brings you to these two iconic 16th-century landmarks.

  • The Basilica is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. Observe the devotees dancing the "Sinulog" prayer outside.

  • Magellan’s Cross is housed in a stone kiosk right next to the church. This marks the spot where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross in 1521.

7. Fort San Pedro (~400m)

  • End your tour at the smallest, oldest triangular bastion fort in the country, located in Plaza Independencia.

  • Walk along the ramparts for a view of the Cebu channel and the new CCLEX bridge.

8. FINISH - National Museum of the Philippines

Housed in the beautifully restored Aduana (Custom House) building, which dates back to 1910, the museum is an architectural marvel in itself.

  • The museum features several permanent galleries, including exhibitions on Cebu's geological history, archaeological finds from the San Diego shipwreck, and the "Kinaiyahan" gallery which focuses on the region's unique flora and fauna.

  • It houses the "Ang Kamgi" gallery, dedicated to the works of renowned Cebuano artists, providing insight into the local art scene's evolution.

Admission is free for all visitors, though you are required to present a valid ID and register upon entry.

BEST PLACES TO EAT IN CEBU CITY - MAP

Cebu City's food scene is a vibrant mix of Spanish influence, Chinese heritage and indigenous flavors. It’s a city where you can move from a high-end rooftop lounge to a plastic stool at a street-side grill in the same evening.

🍽️ Local Specialties

Cebu is world-famous for its roasted pig, but the local palate is much broader.

Cebu Lechon

  • Cebu City lechon is widely considered the "gold standard" of roasted pig in the Philippines. In fact, the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain famously declared it the "best pig ever" after trying it in Cebu.

  • Unlike the lechon found in Manila or other parts of the northern Philippines, Cebu’s version is distinctive because it is so flavorful it doesn't require any sauce.

What Makes It Unique?

  • The Stuffing - The pig is stuffed with a rich mix of local aromatics, typically including lemongrass (tanglad), star anise, spring onions, laurel leaves, and garlic.

  • The Skin - It is roasted over open charcoal for hours, resulting in a glass-like, crackling skin that stays crispy for a long time.

  • No Liver Sauce - While other regions use a thick, sweet liver sauce, Cebuanos traditionally dip their lechon only in a simple mixture of native vinegar (sukang pinakurat), soy sauce, and calamansi.

Where to Find the Best Lechon

Rico’s Lechon

  • Spicy Lechon - the pioneer of the "spicy" flavor very popular with tourists.

Zubuchon

  • Known for using no MSG and high-quality local ingredients.

CnT Lechon

  • Classic Local Taste - a long-time local favorite, best eaten fresh for lunch.

House of Lechon

  • Carcar-Style - offers a premium dining experience with a focus on "Carcar" flavors. The defining characteristic of Carcar lechon is the use of drippings (the juices collected while roasting) poured directly over the meat after it is chopped. These drippings are salty, savory and often mixed with the aromatics used inside the pig.

Pro-Tip

If you want the best experience go before noon. Most lechon is roasted early in the morning, and by the afternoon, the skin begins to lose its crunch. Many of the best shops sell out completely by 2 pm.

Puso (Hanging Rice)

  • Rice boiled in woven coconut leaves. It’s the essential side for any Cebuano BBQ.

Ngohiong

  • A Cebuano-Chinese deep-fried vegetable roll (usually palm hearts) seasoned with five-spice powder.

Tuslob Buwa

  • An interactive dish where you "dip" hanging rice into a bubbling gravy made of pig’s brain, liver, and spices. Head to Azul for a modern take.

☕ Oldest and Most Famous Establishments

Circa 1900

  • Housed in a beautifully restored colonial mansion from - you guessed it - the early 1900s. It offers a refined look at Cebuano heritage.

MANGOES

Cebu’s mangoes are legendary, specifically the Carabao mango (also known as the Philippine Mango). They are widely considered some of the sweetest in the world due to their thin pits and high sugar content, which can reach over 20° Brix when fully ripe.

Peak Season

While mangoes are available year-round in Cebu, the quality and price vary significantly:

  • Peak Season - March to June (the Philippine summer). This is when the fruit is at its largest, sweetest, and most affordable.

  • Off-Season - July to February. You can still find them, but they are often smaller, slightly more expensive, and may be sourced from other regions like Mindanao or Luzon to meet demand.

Popular Mango Products

Cebu is the world’s hub for processed mangoes.

  • Dried Mangoes are the most famous souvenir. Brands like 7D and Cebu's Best are top-tier. Stick to 7D if you like them chewy and tart, or Cebu's Best if you prefer a softer, sweeter texture.

Desserts

Save room for their traditional sweets, particularly the Halo-halo with fresh mangoes and ube ice cream.

  • La Casa Vieja is located on J. Fortich Street in the Banawa area. Situated directly across from the Alliance of Two Hearts Parish, making it easy to find using the church as a landmark.

NIGHT MARKETS - MAP

Cebu City’s night market scene is a highlight of its nightlife, ranging from organized, modern food parks to raw, bustling street markets. There are three main permanent / seasonal night markets in the city, plus several pop-up food parks.

  • Specialty - Authentic BBQ (pork/chicken), Tuslob Buwa (pig brain gravy), and fresh seafood you can have cooked on the spot.

The Whale Shark Phenomenon

  • Oslob is known for its guaranteed year-round whale shark sightings due to the practice of provisioning (hand-feeding them with shrimp by local fishermen).

  • This activity is highly controversial and criticized by many marine conservation groups. They argue that feeding disrupts the whale sharks' natural migratory and feeding patterns leading to reliance on the food source and increased risk of injuries (like boat propeller cuts) from associating boats with food.

  • The whale shark tourism activity, which began in late 2011, rapidly transformed Oslob from a sleepy town into a bustling economic hub, providing significant income and livelihood for the local community.

Tumalog Falls

About Dumaguete City

Dumaguete is the ultimate jump-off point for marine adventures. Apo Island (world-class diving and swimming with sea turtles), Manjuyod Sandbar (the "Maldives of the Philippines" with dolphin watching), and easy access to nearby Siquijor Island

Forbes Magazine listed Dumaguete as one of the "7 Best Places to Retire Around the World" due to its low cost of living, friendly

environment, and accessibility.

📜 Colonial History

The Devastation of the 1753 Moro Raid

One of the most destructive pirate incursions, or Moro raids on the settlement of Dumaguete occurred in May to June 1753. While many coastal towns in the Visayas were subjected to continuous raids throughout the 17th and 18th centuries this particular attack stands out for its sheer scale of destruction and its devastating human cost.

Complete Destruction -

  • The pirates successfully razed Dumaguete to the ground. The raiders demolished every structure in the settlement including houses and the fledgling church, leaving nothing salvageable in their wake. This level of comprehensive destruction was a common tactic aimed at crippling Spanish-allied communities.

Mass Abduction -

  • The primary and most horrific objective of the raids was the capture of Christian Filipinos for slavery. During the 1753 campaign more than six hundred natives were abducted from Dumaguete and its surrounding districts. Accounts indicate that "only three were able to escape," highlighting the ruthlessness and efficiency of the pirate forces.

Economic Motives

  • Although often framed in religious terms the raids were primarily economic in nature, fueled by the lucrative demand for slaves in places like the Dutch East Indies. The captives provided manpower for the pirate sultanates and were a high-value commodity in the regional slave trade.

This single event encapsulated the "epoch of wholesale misery" that Moro piracy inflicted on the Spanish-controlled Visayas, making the coastal inhabitants live in constant fear for over two centuries. The raid's lasting psychological and material damage made the need for fortified defenses, like the Dumaguete Belfry, a matter of survival. It was originally built as a watchtower to warn residents of the incoming pirate raids.

American Era (1898 - 1946)

Silliman University

  • The American era brought one of the city’s most important institutions, the Silliman University, established in 1901. It was the first Protestant university in the Philippines and the first American-founded university in all of Asia. Its establishment cemented Dumaguete’s reputation as the intellectual heart of the Visayas.

Step 1: Dumaguete City to the Bus Terminal

  • Trike from your hotel to the Ceres Bus Terminal or the jeepney station near Robinsons Place Dumaguete. 15 mins.

  2. Tell the bus conductor or driver to drop you off at Malatapay Market in Zamboanguita. The market is the official jump-off point for Apo Island. Travel Time is about 30 – 45 minutes.

Step 3: Boat to Apo Island

  • You have two main choices:
Public/Shared Boat (Banca) - Don't leave until they are full.

🏝️ Apo Island: A World-Class Conservation Success Story

Apo Island's most compelling history revolves around a revolutionary act of conservation.

  • In the 1970s, the marine life around the island was severely threatened by destructive fishing practices like dynamite and cyanide fishing causing fish stocks and coral health to plummet.

  • In 1982, marine scientist Dr. Angel Alcala of Silliman University worked with the local fishing community. After three years of dialogue, the community agreed to establish the Philippines' first successful community-based marine sanctuary—a "no-take zone" where fishing was strictly forbidden.

  • The conservation effort was a phenomenal success. The fish population and coral biomass rebounded dramatically, creating a spillover effect that boosted fishing yields in the surrounding areas where fishing was still allowed.

This initiative is now a world-renowned model for marine resource management demonstrating how local communities can effectively protect their environment and transition from resource depletion to sustainable ecotourism.

Best Places to Stay on Apo Island

Apo has limited electicity

  • The Kinilaw (raw fresh tuna marinated in lemon juice and spices) is highly recommended.

Where to watch the Sunset in Apo Island

Sunset and Peace -

  • After the last day-trip boat leaves around 3 - 4 pm the island empties out. This is when the island is at its most magical and peaceful. You can walk the beach, catch a magnificent sunset among the rock formations, and simply relax with the sound of the ocean, away from the crowds.

  • Apo Island Lighthouse - The trail to the lighthouse starts near the main boat harbor and climbs to the highest point on the island. From the top, you get a 360-degree view, making it an excellent vantage point to watch the sun dip below the horizon over the ocean.

  • If you prefer a more relaxing on-the-sand experience the Main Beach / Village Area on the island's southwest side is ideal. The main concentration of resorts and the village is situated here, providing a naturally west-facing view perfect for sunset viewing right from the shore.

Bars on the Beach Looking West

The best options for a drink by the beach which is inherently facing west for sunset viewing are the small bars and restaurants operated by the resorts in the main village area.

  • Apo Island Beach Resort - This resort has a beachside restaurant and bar where you can enjoy a drink and dinner sometimes arranged right on the sand under the stars.

  • Liberty Lodge & Dive Resort - This is another popular accommodation option that features an ocean-facing restaurant and common area where you can relax with a drink.

Many visitors find the lack of a lively night life scene to be part of the island's charm.

  • The island runs on limited electricity often only for a few hours in the evening, which naturally prevents any substantial nightlife from developing.

  • Nightlife here consists of relaxing with a few drinks chatting with other guests and locals and enjoying the quiet silence and star-filled sky.

The Lokal

  • Happy hours and occasionally live performances.

Apo Island is an excellent spot for stargazing!

  • It is ideal for astronomy enthusiasts because it is a small isolated volcanic island with minimal light pollution. Since the island has limited infrastructure and electricity is often turned off or severely restricted at night the darkness is profound allowing for incredibly clear views of the night sky.

  • Some travel guides specifically recommend going to the island to see the Milky Way and capture starry night photos.

Apo Island Lighthouse

  • Why it's the best - The hike up to the lighthouse will take you to the highest point on the island giving you a completely unobstructed 360-degree view of the horizon. Being away from the village lights this spot offers the deepest darkness for viewing stars and the Milky Way.

  • Bring a red-light flashlight for the climb back down and to maintain your night vision.

  • To maximize your experience check the moon phase before you go. The best stargazing is always during the New Moon phase when the moonlight is not competing with the starlight.

SIQUIJOR ISLAND - MAP

The Island of Magic and Mystery

Siquijor is a mystical and beautiful island province in the Central Visayas region described as a perfect blend of natural splendor, ancient history and intriguing folklore.

🔮 What Siquijor is Famous For

The island is considered a center for spiritualism, traditional healing and folk medicine. Glowing Shores

  • On certain nights one of the more fantasy-like sights is the possibility of seeing phosphorescent planktons highlighting the shoreline. A rare natural phenomenon that contributes to the island's magical atmosphere.

📜 History

Before Spanish colonization

  • The island was known as Katugasan named after the abundance of molave trees (tugas) that grew on the island. The natives prized this wood for its strength and durability in building homes.

Spanish Occupation

  • The Spanish first sighted the island in 1565. They named it "Isla del Fuego" or the "Island of Fire." This poetic name came from the eerie, twinkling glow the island emitted at night, caused by the great swarms of fireflies that lived among the molave trees.

It's important to know that many healers practice for free and only accept donations for their services, but the potions and ready-made herbal items are typically available for purchase.

The main highlight is on Black Saturday where healers gather at Mt. Bandilaan National Park to ritually cook their gathered ingredients in large cauldrons of coconut oil. You can observe the process and the incantations they perform.

Tourists and locals alike visit the mananambal to purchase traditional herbal medicines, amulets (agimat) and even love potions (gayuma). Some healers may offer consultations or healing rituals.

CAMIGUIN ISLAND -

The Island Born of Fire

Camiguin earned its famous nickname because it has seven volcanoes—more per square kilometer than any other place in the Philippines. Its entire landscape from its jagged peaks to its therapeutic hot springs is a direct result of intense volcanic activity. The island has managed to retain a quiet, laid-back and rural charm making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers and those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. The island is only about 64 kilometers in circumference making it easy to tour all the main sights by motorcycle or car in a single day.

About

Camiguin’s history is inextricably linked to its geology marked by periods of Spanish colonization and devastating volcanic events.

Old Spanish records show that explorers Ferdinand Magellan (1521) and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi (1565) both landed on the island. The first Spanish settlement was established in 1598 in what is now Guinsiliban. This settlement was strategically important for keeping watch against Moro pirates. The major Spanish settlement, Katagman (now Catarman) was established in 1679 and grew into a prosperous town.

The Great Eruptions (1871-1875)

The eruption of Mount Vulcan starting in 1871 catastrophically destroyed the flourishing town of Katagman. The eruption caused the land to subside, sinking the town's public cemetery and other areas below the sea which created the famous Sunken Cemetery and the nearby Gui-ob Old Church Ruins. This event fundamentally reshaped the northern part of the island.

20th Century Volcanic Activity -

In the early 1900s, the municipality of Mambajao developed into the busiest port in Northern Mindanao. The island saw a major, destructive eruption of Mount Hibok-Hibok from 1948–1951, which tragically killed around 500 people. In the aftermath of the eruption the government established a volcanological outpost to monitor the volcano.

  • More Volcanoes than Towns - Camiguin is often stated to have seven volcanoes for only five municipalities (Mambajao, Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay, and Catarman).

  • Unique Water Sources - Aside from the hot and cold springs, it is home to the Bura Natural Soda Water Swimming Pool. A natural spring where the water is said to taste mildly carbonated.

  • Giant Clam Sanctuary - The island is home to the community-run facility dedicated to protecting and breeding the endangered giant clam species in the ocean off its coast.

  • Black and White Beaches - While famous for the white sandbars of White Island and Mantigue Island, most of the natural beaches on the main island are composed of black volcanic sand—a beautiful reminder of the island's fiery origins.

Best Things to See & Do in Camiguin - MAP

Sto. Niño Cold Spring

Offers a truly natural fish spa experience as part of the overall attraction. This is a large, natural swimming pool fed by refreshing crystal-clear water flowing directly from Mt. Mambajao at a cool, constant temperature. It's a popular spot so visiting early in the morning or on a weekday is recommended to avoid crowds.

The natural environment of the spring pool is home to little fishes that swim around in the water.  As you soak your feet or swim these small wild fish will naturally nibble at the dead skin cells on your feet and body.

Ardent Hibok-Hibok Hot Springs

These pools are heated by the active Hibok-Hibok Volcano and are perfect for a relaxing therapeutic soak.

Bura Soda Water Swimming Pool

This unique spring is known for its bubbly, soda-like water, which is great for swimming.  Said to be the first of its kind in the Philippines this pool is fed by a natural cold spring whose water locals say has a slight, unique soda-like taste. There are designated faucets where you can try the water.

Katibawasan Falls - 70 to 76m

Is considered one of the most stunning waterfalls on the island.

Here are the key details about the falls. The majestic waterfall cascades from a height of  70 m - 76 m making it the tallest single-drop waterfall in Camiguin.

It is nestled at the foot of Mt. Timpoong, surrounded by lush greenery, ferns and wild orchids. It is about a 15-minute ride from the town proper of Mambajao.

  • The Pool - The waterfall drops into a clear, cold, natural swimming pool that is great for a refreshing dip or swim. For safety visitors are advised not to go near the point where the water falls.

  • The area is developed with amenities like a ticket office and small stalls selling snacks and souvenirs.

  • 8 am - 5 pm

Tuasan Falls - 20 to 25m

Is one of the island's main natural attractions known for its clear, cool waters and lush surroundings. The falls cascade into a large natural basin, which forms a cool and clear swimming area. Unlike some other remote falls, Tuasan is very accessible thanks to a well-maintained road that leads right up to the area.

It is nestled within a lush, tropical jungle environment, providing a refreshing escape with beautiful rock formations surrounding the pool.

7 am - 5 pm with a small entrace fee.

The Pilgrimage to the Old Volcano (Mt. Vulcan)

The Walkway to the Old Volcano is commonly referred to by locals as part of the Panaad (a Visayan word meaning "vow" or "promise"). It serves as a major site for this devotional practice.

The tradition of the Stations of the Cross began centuries ago when Christians wanted to retrace the final steps of Jesus Christ on his way to his crucifixion in Jerusalem (known as the Via Dolorosa, or "Way of Sorrow"). For the many who could not travel to the Holy Land, churches and religious sites began to create local, symbolic paths for believers to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation and prayer.

The physical difficulty of climbing the volcano's path (especially the "hard walk" section) is an intentional part of the devotion. For pilgrims, the strenuous effort and potential pain are offered as an act of penance, a sacrifice, or a fulfillment of a vow made to God in exchange for a prayer answered, a grace received, or forgiveness for sins.

🕊️ The Stations of the Cross

The walkway is lined with 14 life-sized statues each representing one of the traditional Stations of the Cross, depicting a key moment in the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. As pilgrims move from one station to the next, they stop to pray, reflect, and meditate on Jesus's immense suffering and sacrifice.

🙏 Importance During Holy Week

The significance of the Walkway explodes during Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter Sunday), when the practice of the Panaad is at its peak. Camiguin sees a massive influx of pilgrims (tens of thousands) from all over the Philippines, all participating in the Panaad.

  • While the Walkway to the Old Volcano (Mt. Vulcan) is technically a single continuous trail to the final station, it is clearly divided into two distinct segments that feel like two different walks due to the major change in terrain and difficulty.

The Easy Walk (The Lower, Paved Section)

This segment provides a gentle introduction to the ascent and is suitable for all fitness levels. A well-maintained paved path with numerous concrete steps making the climb easy and steady. This area is shaded by large trees, providing a cool and pleasant walk.

The Hard Walk (The Upper, Unpaved Trail)

This segment is a more challenging trek, turning the pilgrimage into a more rigorous hike. The remaining distance to the summit or final station, which can be another 1–2 kilometers depending on the path taken making the total ascent roughly 1.5 to 3 km one-way.

  • Can take 30 to 60 minutes of focused trekking, depending on your pace. This section is exposed with fewer trees providing shade. The sun can be intense, making the difficulty level increase significantly. Take plenty of water and a hat.

This challenging ascent leads to the final Stations of the Cross and the final viewpoint which offers the renowned, breathtaking panoramic views of the western coast of Camiguin and the sea including the sunken cemetery.

  • It's best to start the hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the scorching heat of the sun. Local vendors are usually available nearby to sell souvenirs and snacks.

  •  Despite being called the "Old Volcano," Mt. Vulcan is actually the youngest volcano on the island, having been formed relatively recently.

  • The mountain was created during a series of powerful eruptions from 1871 to 1875, which occurred on the flank of the larger Hibok-Hibok Volcano.

The Sunken Cemetery

This is Camiguin's most iconic and unique landmark. Following the eruption of Mount Vulcan in the late 19th century a portion of the old capital including its public cemetery subsided below sea level. A colossal white cross was erected in 1982 to mark the spot, where visitors can now snorkel or dive to see the original tombstones.

You can visit the cross monument on the cliff for a great view or take a boat out to snorkel / dive among the old tombstones and thriving coral reef. It's a hauntingly beautiful and unique experience especially at sunset.

Giant Clam Sanctuary

You can swim and snorkel in the ocean sanctuary to see these massive mollusks up close.

+

Mantigue Island Nature Park

Explore this small, protected four-hectare islet surrounded by a white-sand beach and a marine sanctuary. It is an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving to see vibrant coral gardens, diverse marine life, and the famous giant clams (at the nearby Giant Clam Sanctuary).

Climbing Mount Hibok-Hibok

Is one of the best ways to experience the volcanic heart of Camiguin Island. It's a challenging yet accessible day hike for experienced climbers.

  • Gear - Wear sturdy trekking shoes with good traction, as the trail can be slippery (wet moss, loose soil, mud). Water - Bring a minimum of 2-3 litres of water per person. There are few, if any, reliable water sources along the trail.

  • Go very early in the morning like 5.30 am for a spectacular sunrise, beat the crowds, escape the midday heat and to avoid the high tide, which can partially submerge the sandbar.

  • Getting to White Island (Medano Islet) is a straightforward process  involving a short boat ride from a dedicated ferry terminal in Mambajao.

  • Don't forget to take drinks and snacks. On busy mornings temporary vendors may set up small makeshift stalls selling basic snacks, but the selection is limited and prices are naturally higher than on the mainland.

SIARGAO ISLAND -

The Surfing Capital of the Philippines

Siargao is a breathtaking, tear-drop shaped island in the Philippines, often described as the country's ultimate surf paradise. It's renowned for its world-class waves, lush natural beauty, and a wonderfully laid-back, bohemian atmosphere that attracts travelers from all over the globe.

Siargao Curse

The "curse of Siargao" refers to the irresistible and often magnetic pull of the island that makes visitors reluctant to leave, compelling them to extend their stay or even move there permanently. It is not a traditional curse, but rather a term for the phenomenon where people fall in love with the island's relaxed lifestyle, warm community, world-class surf breaks like Cloud 9, and overall vibe.

  • Many visitors, initially planning short trips, find themselves extending their vacation indefinitely because they love the island so much.

  • Some people who move to Siargao go on to build a new life there, ditching their old lives to stay permanently.

  • The experience often leads people to embrace a simpler, more "show up and live simply but fully" way of life, which may involve a new career path or a completely different lifestyle than the one they left behind.

  • The phenomenon is often referred to as the "Siargao magic" because it's viewed as a positive, life-changing experience.

Reasons for the "curse"

  • World-class surfing - The island is famous for its consistent and high-quality waves, which is a huge draw for surfers from around the world.

  • Warm community - The locals are known for being welcoming and friendly, which helps visitors feel a sense of belonging.

  • Vibrant community and lifestyle - The island has a captivating aura and a thriving community, from local artisans to the hospitality industry, that can be incredibly appealing.

Transport - MAP

Fly from Camaguin to Siargao via Mactan Airport.

History

Siargao's history traces a path from an ancient dwelling place to an international tourist hotspot.

  • European Discovery - The first recorded European sighting of the island was in 1543 by the Spanish navigator Bernardo de la Torre. He chartered the island as Isla de las Palmas (Palm Island) due to the dense concentration of coconut trees.

  • Early Inhabitants - The island was historically home to indigenous groups, including the Lumads and the Surigaonon people, who were skilled fishermen and traders. The town of General Luna was once known as Cabuntog.

  • The Rise of Surf Culture - Siargao remained a quiet, isolated fishing island for centuries. Its fate changed in the 1980s when international surfers discovered the iconic Cloud 9 surf break. The island's powerful waves, warm water, and welcoming locals quickly put it on the global map. The first international surfing cup was held here in the 1990s.

  • "The Father of Philippine Surfing" - The former mayor of General Luna, Jaime Rusillon, is often referred to as the "Father of Philippine Surfing" for his role in promoting the sport and the island.

The most famous surf spot, Cloud 9, was named by American photographer and surfer John Seaton Callahan in the 1980s. He thought the reef and barrel wave reminded him of the texture of a popular American chocolate bar of the same name. Due to its popularity, surfers sometimes jokingly call it "Crowd 9."

The Philippine Trench - Siargao is located very close to the Philippine Deep, the lowest point of the Philippine Trench. Secret Beach aka Doot Beach

Offers one of the island's most peaceful and unique water adventures centered around a stunning natural feature - the mangrove labyrinth.

  • The kayaking path weaves through a dense network of mangroves. Their intricate, exposed roots create a natural, maze-like waterway that is visually striking and incredibly tranquil.

  • The water in this area is generally calm, clear and shallow, making it an excellent and relatively easy spot for kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding.

Rentals Kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) are readily available for rent directly at the beach. Local guides are available for hire if you prefer assistance navigating the mangrove maze.

Important Tips

Be Mindful of Tides -

  • This is the most crucial factor. The waters are shallow, and the experience changes drastically depending on the tide.
Low Tide might make the water too shallow for paddling in certain areas.

  • High Tide offers deeper water but can sometimes bring stronger currents, especially during a tide change.
Always consult the local rental operator for the best time to paddle based on the current tide schedule.

Best Time to Visit -

  • Early mornings are recommended to avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. There are limited options for food and drink on the sand itself. It is highly advised to pack your own water and snacks for your time on the beach.

Wear Water Shoes - 🐊🐊

  • The seabed can sometimes be rocky or have bits of coral, so water shoes or durable sandals are a good idea for protecting your feet.

Beto Cold Spring

Is a popular and fun natural attraction offering a refreshing escape from the tropical heat.

It is one of the larger and more developed cold springs on the island situated along a river and surrounded by lush greenery.

The main draw is the refreshingly cold, crystal-clear spring water that emerges from the ground and mixes with the river.  The spring has two sections - a shallow pool where the spring originates, ideal for quiet relaxation. And a deeper area built up with a wooden pier with rope swings and jumping platforms.

Kayaking - You can rent a kayak or canoe to explore the nearby river and surrounding mangroves or visit the local village.

  • 7. 30 am - 5.30 pm - less crowded on weekdays - wear your Crocs

  • The Secret Lagoon - The ride typically lasts about 10 to 30 minutes, leading to a point locals call the 'Secret Lagoon.' This is a clear, cold spring that feeds into the river, where you can swim and cool off.

  • Rope Swing & Jumping - The Maasin River is famous for its iconic bent palm tree. While the original tree was damaged by a typhoon, a new wooden platform has been installed at the bridge, allowing visitors to climb up and use a rope swing to jump directly into the river.

Arrive early, ideally before 9 am to avoid the midday crowds, especially those arriving on the main island tour buses. The water is also often higher and calmer in the morning.

  • 7 am - 5 pm

  • Only small bills and coins are accepted for the entrance and parking fees.

  • The rocks and concrete paths around the falls can be slippery. Crocs are recommended.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) are undertaking a massive, long-term project called the PNR Bicol Project (or South Long Haul) to completely rehabilitate and modernize the entire railway line.

🌋 A Snapshot of Legazpi

The city that offers the closest, most spectacular and most iconic views of the perfectly cone-shaped Mayon Volcano. Situated on the Albay Gulf and the southern base of Mayon Volcano. Serves as the administrative, commercial, educational and transportation hub for the entire Bicol Region.

📜History

Legazpi's history is a compelling story of rebirth, volcanic destruction and colonial influence.

The Eruption That Moved a Town (1814)

The single most pivotal event in the region's history was the catastrophic eruption of Mayon Volcano on February 1, 1814.

  • The eruption was the most destructive in Mayon's recorded history, burying several towns, including the original settlement of Cagsawa, under torrents of lava and ash.

  • The Iconic Cagsawa Ruins are the direct result of this event. Today, only the bell tower of the 17th-century church remains, standing as a stark and moving monument to the over 1,000 people killed and the town that was leveled. The image of the lone bell tower against the backdrop of the Mayon cone is Legazpi's signature historical landmark.

  • After the disaster, many residents of the destroyed town of Cagsawa resettled, contributing to the growth of the nearby areas, including the present-day Legazpi.

  • The city was officially named Legazpi in 1856 by Royal Decree to honor Adelantado Don Miguel López de Legazpi, the Basque Spanish conquistador and first Governor-General of the Philippines who established the first Spanish settlements in the archipelago in the 16th century.

  • The city's famous Daraga Church (Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church) is one of the only churches in the area that survived the 1814 eruption, mainly because it sits on a hilltop. It is renowned for its facade, which is built primarily out of volcanic stone—a practical and tough material made readily available due to Mayon's constant activity. The church was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007.

The Chinese General

  • Legazpi was the site of the Battle of Legazpi during the Philippine-American War in 1900. The Filipino forces were led by General Ignacio Paua, who is historically significant as the only pure-blooded Chinese general to support the Filipino forces (Katipuneros) against both the Spaniards and Americans. His monument stands in the city.

Pre-Colonial Maritime Trade

  • Archaeological finds on nearby Cagraray Island, like the Mataas Shell Scoop (a bailer fashioned from a shell), are radiocarbon-dated to between c. 2000 BCE and 300 CE, indicating human occupation and participation in regional maritime trade networks dating back over 4,000 years, long before the Spanish arrived.

Bicolano Local Specialties

The cuisine of the Bicol region is defined by two key ingredients -  coconut milk (gata) and chili peppers (sili).

Bicol Express -

Bicol Express is one of the most famous dishes in Filipino cuisine, known for its powerful combination of creamy coconut richness and intense spice.

  • It is a spicy Filipino stew made primarily with sliced pork (often pork belly), long chili peppers (siling haba), coconut milk or cream (kakang gata), and seasoned with shrimp paste (bagoong alamang), onion, garlic, and ginger.

  • The modern name was coined in the 1970s by Laguna native Cely Kalaw in her Manila restaurant. She named it after the Bicol Express train, the Philippine National Railways service that operated the route from Manila to Legazpi City, likening the dish's spicy kick to the speed of the locomotive.

Laing / Pinangat -

ABOUT

Here is how the hierarchy works for the Taal formation, going from the outermost island to the innermost -

  1. Island 1 (The largest) - Luzon Island (the main island of the Philippines where Manila is located).

  2. Lake 1 (On Island 1) - Taal Lake (the large body of water that fills the Taal Caldera).

  3. Island 2 (In Lake 1) - Volcano Island (the island in the center of Taal Lake where the active volcano vents are located).

  4. Lake 2 (On Island 2) - Main Crater Lake (the lake that fills the main crater on Volcano Island).

  5. Island 3 (In Lake 2) - Vulcan Point (the small rocky island in the center of the Main Crater Lake).

Important Note on Vulcan Point

While this geographical structure was famously completed by Vulcan Point, its status has been affected by the 2020 Taal eruption.

  • The eruption caused the Main Crater Lake (Lake 2) to evaporate temporarily.

  • When the lake refilled, Vulcan Point was transformed into a peninsula attached to the crater wall, or submerged and re-emerged as a less-defined feature.

The Canadian Competitor

  • Taal is one of only two confirmed examples of a natural third-order recursive island in the world. The other is a nameless, much larger island located within a remote part of Victoria Island in Canada's Nunavut Territory.

History

The city’s strategic, elevated location played a significant role during both the Philippine Revolution and World War II.

  • During the Philippine Revolution of 1896, Tagaytay's thick forests and vast, rolling terrain made it an ideal hideout and sanctuary. Revolutionaries known as the Katipuneros used the area for refuge. Their travels across the ridge were described with the phrase "MANANAGAYTAY," which means "traversing the ridges of Tagaytay."

  • In 1945, at the end of World War II, the ridge served as a crucial drop zone for the American liberation forces. Prior to the retaking of Manila from the Japanese, the U.S. 11th Airborne Division airdropped essential military supplies and personnel onto the Tagaytay ridge.

The World's Smallest Active Volcano -

  • Taal Volcano is famous for being one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes, and the second most active in the Philippines.

1 OR 2 NIGHT TRIP TO THE HOTSPRINGS - MAP

Early Start

  • You'll need to head off early around 7.30 am to pick up your day pass and start using it. Spend the day enjoying the resort.

Get there before dark

  • It will take an hour or so to cover the 40 kms to your hotel. Give yourself plenty of time to get there, look around and have a soak before it gets dark.

  • Have a good soak at the resort today. Stay an extra night if you feel like it. When you head off there are a couple of points of interest on the way home.

On the way home

  • Stop off at the birthplace of a someone special. A faithful replica of the house where the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was born. It's a national historical landmark with exhibits of memorabilia. José Rizal was born here on June 19, 1861 and lived here until he started his formal studies in Biñan.

  • However, the house standing there today is a reproduction. The original house was confiscated by the Spanish government, fell into disrepair and was destroyed during World War II. The current structure, which serves as the museum (Museo ni José Rizal Calamba), was reconstructed on the original foundation in 1949–1950.

  • Futher up the road is the Marcos Twin Mansion aka the Cabuyao Mansion. It was built in the 1980s and was intended to be a luxurious rest house for the Marcos family referred to as the "Malacañang of the South."

  • The mansion was among the properties sequestered by the Philippine government's Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) in 1987 as part of the alleged ill-gotten wealth acquired by the Marcos family. While there have been legal attempts to reclaim the property, as of recent reports, it remains under the control of the PCGG.

  • The property is known for its grand, imposing facade, which includes the distinctive twin structures that gave it its popular name.

  • It has been used as a filming location for various local films and television shows.

  • The mansion is generally not officially open to the public for tours or easy entry due to its uncertain legal status and operational control. Visitors typically view the property from the perimeter, though some local guides or previous arrangements may have allowed limited access in the past.

Pie

  • Finally stop off for some fabulous Cecilia's Buco Pie. A favorite for its creamy filling and generous amount of young coconut (buko) strips.

Originally a fortified Muslim kingdom known as "Maynilad," ruled by Rajah Sulayman, the settlement was already a thriving center of commerce with networks extending across Southeast Asia and to China long before the arrival of Europeans.

HISTORY

The Spanish Era, Intramuros, and José Rizal (1571–1898)

The city's colonial narrative began in 1571 when the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi defeated Sulayman and established Manila as the seat of the Spanish East Indies. The Spaniards immediately built Intramuros (meaning "within the walls") a massive, 64-hectare stone citadel that served as the impenetrable center of political, military, and religious authority for 327 years.

Manila’s economic engine during this period was the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade (1565–1815), a transatlantic link that funneled Chinese silks, porcelain and spices through the city to the Americas and ultimately to Europe. This global trade cemented Manila's role as the "Pearl of the Orient," even as Spanish friars solidified the dominance of Catholicism, building the city's iconic baroque churches.

The desire for self-determination eventually ignited a fierce wave of nationalism. This sentiment was galvanized by intellectuals like Dr. José Rizal, who through his satirical novels exposed the abuses of the colonial regime. Rizal’s execution by firing squad in 1896 at Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park), just outside Intramuros, transformed him into a national martyr. His death directly accelerated the Philippine Revolution, marking the beginning of the end for Spanish rule.

The American Era, Commonwealth, and Manuel L. Quezon (1898–1941)

Following the Spanish-American War in 1898 the Philippines was ceded to the United States. This ushered in a fundamental transformation, shifting Manila's focus from a walled fortress to an open, modern city. American administrators introduced public education, civil governance, and significant urban planning.

The American architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham envisioned a "City Beautiful," designing wide, tree-lined boulevards, government buildings and public parks that extended Manila beyond the narrow confines of Intramuros. The city flourished economically, characterized by neoclassical architecture, jazz music and a vibrant cultural life.

In 1935 the Philippines transitioned to a semi-autonomous government known as the Commonwealth, with Manuel L. Quezon as its first President. Quezon presided over a rapidly modernizing Manila, steering the nation toward its eventual independence scheduled for 1946. He faced the monumental task of nation-building and strengthening defenses as the specter of war loomed large over the Pacific.

World War II, MacArthur, and Utter Devastation (1941–1945)

The advent of World War II brought unimaginable destruction. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces swiftly invaded. President Quezon recognizing the futility of defense, declared Manila an "Open City" on December 26, 1941, hoping to spare it from heavy fighting. This effort failed.

Following a retreat American General Douglas MacArthur famously vowed, “I shall return.” The Japanese occupation was brutal, characterized by shortages and atrocities. MacArthur made good on his promise in 1944. The subsequent Battle of Manila in 1945, fought by joint American and Filipino forces to liberate the city from entrenched Japanese resistance, became one of the war's most brutal urban battles. The month-long conflict resulted in the death of over 100,000 civilians and the near-total destruction of the city’s historic center, including Intramuros. Manila became the second-most devastated Allied capital city of World War II, second only to Warsaw.

Post-War Republic, The Marcos Years, and the Aquinos (1946–Present)

The Philippines gained full independence in 1946, and Manila began the arduous process of rebuilding. The capital experienced a surge in population and rapid infrastructure development, transforming into the bustling megacity of Metro Manila.

In 1965, Ferdinand Marcos was elected President, presiding over a period of economic growth and massive infrastructure projects. This development culminated in the declaration of Martial Law in 1972, ushering in an era of authoritarian rule. Marcos concentrated power in Manila, building grand structures like the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Philippine International Convention Center (under the guidance of his wife, Imelda Marcos). Aiming to project an image of national greatness and cultural supremacy, even as political freedoms were curtailed and corruption flourished.

The resistance to the Marcos dictatorship was tragically highlighted by the assassination of opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. in 1983, upon his return to Manila at the airport (now named Ninoy Aquino International Airport, NAIA). Ninoy’s death proved to be the spark that ignited widespread popular resistance. In 1986, his widow, Corazón "Cory" Aquino, led the opposition, culminating in the EDSA People Power Revolution. A massive, non-violent demonstration that took place on the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), Manila's main circumferential highway. The revolution successfully overthrew the Marcos regime, restoring democracy and defining a new chapter for the city.

Today, Manila is a sprawling testament to its turbulent history—a megacity of vibrant commercial districts, dense poverty, towering skyscrapers, and meticulously restored colonial sites. It is a metropolis where historical scars meet relentless energy, constantly reinventing itself while retaining the deep, rich layers of its complex past.

🏰 Historical & Cultural Gems

  • The World's Oldest Chinatown - Manila's Binondo district established in 1594, is the oldest Chinatown in the world. It was created by the Spanish colonial government as a settlement for Catholic Chinese immigrants (Sangleys) outside the walls of Intramuros.

  • Asia's Oldest University - The University of Santo Tomas (UST), located in Manila, was founded in 1611, making it the oldest existing university in Asia. It is even older than Harvard University in the United States!

  • The Iconic Jeepney - The colorful and unique Jeepneys that crisscross Manila’s streets are arguably the most iconic symbol of Filipino culture. They were originally manufactured from US military jeeps left over after World War II, which Filipinos ingeniously lengthened, modified, and decorated.

Best Places to Eat in Manila - MAP

Manila's dining scene is defined by its fusion of Filipino, Spanish and Chinese flavors, rooted in history. It is rapidly moving towards Modern Filipino cuisine, driven by young chefs emphasizing local sourcing and innovative techniques to elevate street food and traditional dishes to global fine-dining standards.

The Aristocrat Restaurant - One of my all time favourites

  • Specialty - The Aristocrat Chicken Barbecue (Boneless Chicken Barbecue with Java Rice and its signature sauce) and Lumpiang Shanghai.

  • Why it's Famous - Established in 1936, it is arguably one of the most beloved and legendary restaurants in Metro Manila. Its main branch on Roxas Boulevard is an iconic fixture and it helped popularize many classic Filipino dishes. Locals often call it the "Home of the Best Chicken Barbecue."

The Aristocrat Restaurant has a rich history as one of the Philippines' most enduring and iconic dining establishments, founded by the renowned chef and entrepreneur Engracia "Lola Asiang" Cruz-Reyes.

Early Beginnings (1928) - Engracia Cruz-Reyes first converted the ground floor of her family's house in Manila into a small eatery called Lapu-Lapu, where she served affordable and delicious Filipino food.

The Mobile Store (1930s) - She started selling her homemade Adobo Sandwiches—a Filipino twist on the Western sandwich—to picnic-goers at Luneta Park from a car.

The Founding (1936) - Cruz-Reyes officially launched her mobile restaurant as a "rolling store" (similar to a modern day food truck), which she named "The Aristocrat." The name was an ironic nod to her goal of serving traditional Filipino food—which was not considered "first-class" fare by the local elite at the time—in a way that made everyone "eat like an Aristocrat."

The First Permanent Location (1938) - Due to its success, she opened a permanent restaurant on Dewey Boulevard (now Roxas Boulevard) in Malate, Manila.

The Birth of Chicken Barbecue (1945) - During the post-war period, the restaurant opened a beach resort branch. To solve the problem of customers losing cutlery by bringing it to their beach huts, Lola Asiang began serving food barbecue-style, on a stick, which required fewer utensils. This innovation led to the creation of the now-famous Aristocrat Chicken Barbecue with java rice and peanut sauce.

A Filipino Institution - The Aristocrat survived World War II and grew to become a Filipino family favorite, known for its commitment to serving quality Filipino food. Lola Asiang was later recognized as the "Mother of Filipino Cooking" in 1980.

The restaurant's legacy continues today, run by the third and fourth generations of the Reyes family.

  • A dependable place for traditional, comforting Filipino food open 24/7 at the main location.

  • SM San Lazaro (Sta. Cruz)

Ma Mon Luk

Specialty - Mami (Filipino-Chinese noodle soup) and Siopao (steamed buns).

Why it's Famous - The founder, Ma Mon Luk, is credited with inventing Mami and Siopao as they are known in the Philippines. It's a true piece of culinary history, with the oldest remaining branches still serving food in its original, no-frills style.

Max's Restaurant - "The House That Fried Chicken Built"

Specialty - "Sarap to the Bones" Fried Chicken.

Why it's Famous - Started in 1945, Max's is another post-war success story and a national chain known simply for its delicious, tender, and crispy fried chicken. It’s a staple for Filipino family celebrations.

It seems "Fried Chicken" built the house several times over. While the original site is 21 Scout Tuazon Street, Diliman, Quezon City, the building here is quite new. Max's has always emphasized maintaining its presence on the same historic lot where it began, despite the need to update the physical building.

  • As the brand grew into a national chain, the original structure underwent significant renovations to modernize its facilities, expand capacity and meet modern building codes, leading to its current, polished appearance.

Illustrado Restaurant (Intramuros)

Specialty - Fine Filipino-Spanish cuisine, particularly Callos and Paella.

Why it's Famous - Housed in a charming heritage building within the historic Walled City of Intramuros. Dining here transports you back to the Spanish colonial era, offering an elegant setting for traditional Filipino dishes blended with Spanish heritage.

While known more recently for its live music and late-night hours, it is one of the few places in the area with roots stretching back over 40 years.

And just like that your 5 month trip is over. The good news is it's much easier getting to the airport in Manila than it is arriving and trying to get out of it. Without being ripped off! Unless they have addressed the problem and things have changed. If you're not ready to home yet you might want to look at flying to Taipei or Naha and continuing the adventure there. Guides for them coming out soon.
