THE NUSA ISLANDS -
Nusa Lembongan
Nusa Ceningan
Nusa Penida - the Nusa Penida district also includes 11 uninhabited islets.
*Nusa means island in Bahasa and other Indonesian languages - so the moniker Nusa Islands is redundant. Part of the reason for this is to simplify it for tourists. Some other famous examples include -
The La Brea Tar Pits - La Brea means "the tar" in Spanish, so it's "The The Tar Tar Pits."
The Sahara Desert - Sahara means "desert" in Arabic, so it's "The Desert Desert."
Mississippi River - Mississippi is derived from a name meaning "Great River" in the Ojibwe language, so it's "Great River River."
HISTORY
The history of the Nusa Islands is deeply entwined with Balinese mythology, royal conquest and a long-standing reputation as a place of banishment and dark spiritual power.
The first documented evidence of Nusa Penida dates back to the 10th century. The Belanjong Pillar in Sanur, Bali (dated 914 AD), contains inscriptions detailing a military expedition by Sri Kesari Warmadewa, the first King of Bali, against Nusa Penida, suggesting the island was already a significant entity outside of his direct control.
The people of Nusa Penida successfully resisted Balinese military expeditions for centuries. It wasn't until the second half of the 17th century that the powerful Gelgel Dynasty finally conquered the island. The last king of Nusa Penida, Dalem Bungkut, was killed in the battle, and the islands became part of the Klungkung court, one of Bali's nine kingdoms.
Following the conquest, Nusa Penida was infamously used by the Klungkung Regency as a penal colony from the 18th century into the 1930s.
The kingdom deported its criminals, political opponents, and black magic practitioners to the island.
As a result, a Dutch map created in 1900 referred to Nusa Penida as the "Bandit Island" (Bandieten Eiland). This harsh reputation likely fueled the island's dark, mystical legends.
The island's spiritual importance comes from its reputation as the domain of the powerful and feared demon Ratu Gede Mas Mecaling (The Great Lord with Golden Fangs).
Legend states that Mas Mecaling was the deified form of the slain King Dalem Bungkut, or a powerful black magic sorcerer banished from mainland Bali.
He was believed to inflict diseases and epidemics on Bali as an act of revenge.
The annual Balinese New Year, Nyepi (Day of Silence), is traditionally observed without noise or light to deceive any returning demons, a practice historically linked to Mecaling's betrayal during a time of celebration.
The Pura Dalem Ped temple on Nusa Penida is the central site associated with Mecaling's spirit. It is a critical place of pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus, who visit to seek protection from evil and find a balance between the positive and negative spiritual forces of the world.
After Bali was integrated into the Dutch East Indies in 1908, Nusa Penida remained attached to the Klungkung Regency. During World War II, the island was controlled by the Japanese military.
For many decades, particularly on the smaller islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, the main source of livelihood was seaweed farming, a practice that sustained the local communities until the rise of modern tourism.
Since 2006, Nusa Penida along with Lembongan and Ceningan has been established as an unofficial Bali Bird Sanctuary. Local villages enacted traditional regulations (awig-awig) to protect birds, contributing to the successful rehabilitation and release of several species, most notably the critically endangered Bali Starling.
In recent decades, the Nusa Islands have rapidly developed into major tourist destinations, drawing visitors with their dramatic cliffscapes, pristine beaches, and world-class diving spots known for resident manta rays and the seasonal mola-mola (Oceanic Sunfish).
HIGHLIGHTS
The Nusa Islands are famous for their dramatic coastal scenery, pristine beaches and world-class snorkeling and diving.
The majority of the most famous landmarks are on the largest island, Nusa Penida.
Nusa Penida - Map
Nusa Penida is known for its spectacular, rugged cliffs and unique rock formations.
Kelingking Beach - Often called the 'T-Rex' Cliff because the unique limestone headland resembles a Tyrannosaurus Rex head. It's the most iconic and photographed spot.
Angel's Billabong - A stunning natural infinity rock pool that is crystal clear during low tide.
Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) - A circular cove where the ocean flows in through a giant natural arch carved into the rock cliff.
Diamond Beach - Famous for its white-sand beach, turquoise water, and the dramatic, carved staircase leading down the cliffside.
Snorkeling/Diving with Manta Rays - Manta Point and Manta Bay are world-renowned spots for swimming and snorkeling with large, majestic manta rays.
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan
These two smaller islands are connected by a famous bridge and offer a more laid-back vibe with famous viewpoints and water activities.
Devil's Tear (Nusa Lembongan) - A rocky, impressive coastal blowhole where huge waves crash violently into the cliffs, sending sprays of water high into the air. It's especially popular at sunset.
The Yellow Bridge (Jembatan Kuning) - An iconic, brightly colored suspension bridge that connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. It's a popular photo spot and a crucial travel link between the two islands.
Blue Lagoon (Nusa Ceningan) - A breathtaking cove known for its incredibly vibrant, silky blue water. It's primarily a viewpoint, but there is a famous cliff-jumping spot nearby (Mahana Point).
Dream Beach (Nusa Lembongan) - A popular white-sand beach known for its powerful waves and scenic views.

ABOUT
Nusa Lembongan -
Is known as the "chilled-out sister of Bali" offering a peaceful retreat just a short boat ride away. As the most developed of the three Nusa Islands, it perfectly balances a relaxing, no-traffic atmosphere with excellent tourist infrastructure, featuring boutique resorts and stylish beach clubs.
The island is a haven for water enthusiasts, famed for world-class surfing breaks like Shipwrecks and Lacerations and pristine coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and diving.
It is easily explored by scooter, and the iconic Yellow Bridge connects it to the tiny, scenic neighbour, Nusa Ceningan, creating a two-in-one island escape. It provides a relaxed base for day trips to the rugged beauty of Nusa Penida or you could head over and spend a bit of time up in the hills for a change os scene.
Nusa Ceningan -
Is the diminutive middle sister of the Nusa Islands known for its small size and stunning vivid coastal contrasts. It is easily explored in a few hours.
The islandโs most famous feature is the Blue Lagoon, a spectacular cliffside cove where the water is an almost unreal crystalline turquoise. Nearby, thrill-seekers visit Mahana Point for cliff jumping and surfing views. Along the shallow channel separating it from Lembongan, you can observe traditional seaweed farms, which remain a key source of local income.
Despite its size Ceningan offers a serene slightly more secluded atmosphere than Lembongan. With chic beach bars and resorts clinging to the western cliffs providing spectacular sunset views back over Lembongan and mainland Bali.
Nusa Penida -
Is the largest and most rugged of the Nusa Islands. Defined by its towering limestone cliffs and unforgiving hilly terrain it has evolved from a historical place of banishment into a global hotspot for breathtaking viewpoints.
The island is famous for its "Insta-famous" landmarks like the iconic Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff), the turquoise lagoon of Angelโs Billabong, the natural arch of Broken Beach and the stunning staircase descent to Diamond Beach.
Beyond the cliffs it is a marine paradise renowned for world-class diving with giant Manta Rays at Manta Point and the seasonal Mola Mola.
Though infrastructure is still developing, Penida offers an adventurous and less commercialized experience than its neighbours, rewarding visitors willing to navigate its challenging roads for truly unspoiled natural beauty.
WHEN ๐
April to October is the dry season with calm seas and warm sunny weather. Which is good for snorkelling and diving. It is also the best time for surfing due to the offshore winds.
November to March is the wet season which is good for cheaper pricesand fewer people. The wet season on Nusa Lembongan is generally not as wet as Bali because of its lower elevation and lack of large mountains. This means Lembongan often experiences less rainfall and can have sunny days even when it's raining on Bali. There is still surf in the wet season but it is not as good as in the dry.
AIRPORTS - โ๏ธ
Denpasar Airport aka Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) - has direct flights to 61 destinations in 18 countries. Asia and Australia are well served. If you are coming from Europe or the Americas you will have to make your way to the usual travel hubs of Dubai, Doha and the UAE. Surprisingly there are also flights to Istanbul and Moscow.

TRANSPORT
Nusa Lembongan -
Traveling from Denpasar Airport (DPS) to Nusa Lembongan is a straightforward journey involving a land transfer to the harbor and then a short fast boat ride.
The departure point for almost all fast boats to Nusa Lembongan is Sanur Port (also known as Matahari Terbit Port or a variety of other small ports along Sanur Beach).
Book your airport transfer and fast boat ticket with Rocky Fast Cruise online before you get there.
The route from the airport to Sanur Port is 21 km and takes around 45 minutes by car under typical traffic conditions.
The crossing is done by high-speed boat and is very quick taking about 30 mins.
Last Departure from Sanur around 5 pm - 5.30 pm so depending on your arrival time you may need to spend a night in Bali.
There are many scooter rentals available on Nusa Lembongan, making it the most popular and easiest way to get around the small island.
Just like Nusa Penida, when your ferry docks at one of the main ports (usually Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay) you'll be greeted by locals offering scooter rentals right on the spot. This is the quickest way to get wheels.
Most hotels, guesthouses, and resorts offer rentals directly to their guests, which is often the most convenient option.
Scooter hire shops are abundant in the main villages, and you can even ask most restaurants or small shops, and they will likely arrange a rental for you.
Thet are very reasonably priced. You can often negotiate a slightly better rate if you are renting for multiple days.
Unlike Nusa Penida, the roads on Nusa Lembongan are generally in better condition, making for a much easier ride.
The island is very small, and there are virtually no cars, which means you'll mostly share the road with other scooters and small open-air trucks.
You can hire a golf buggy to get around but they are very expensive.
Nusa Ceningan -
You can walk or ride a scooter across the Yellow Bridge.
Nusa Penida -
There are frequent small local speedboats that run between Lembongan's Yellow Bridge area and Nusa Penida's Toyapakeh Harbour.4 This crossing takes only about 10 โ15 minutes.
There are many options for motorbike and scooter rentals right near the ferry/fast boat piers on Nusa Penida, as this area (Toyapakeh/Banjar Nyuh/Ped) is the main entry point to the island.
These places are well rated - Penida Motorbike Rental - Rent Motorbike Nusa Penida - Glory Rental Scooter Nusa Penida - Nusa Penida Scooter Rental
Nusa Penida's roads, especially those leading to the famous west coast attractions (like Kelingking and Broken Beach), are notorious for being very narrow, steep, and heavily potholed.
Only rent a scooter if you are an experienced rider comfortable with navigating challenging conditions and traffic.
Always wear a helmet and drive slowly and cautiously.

Dream Beach -

Panorama Point -
Stop here for a sweeping view of the island's northern half. The main Jungut Batu beach and the majestic Mount Agung volcano on Bali in the distance.
Mangrove Forest -
On the north-eastern side of the island explore the lush, peaceful mangrove forest. You can hire a local boat for a guided tour or rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to navigate the tranquil waterways yourself.

Snorkeling at Mangrove Point on Lembongan or Crystal Bay on Nusa Penida offers vibrant coral reefs and plenty of tropical fish.
Gala-Gala Underground House -
A fascinating and unusual attraction. This underground labyrinth was hand-dug by a local Balinese man over 15 years as a meditation retreat.
Nusa Ceningan - MAP

A beautiful small oasis on the southern tip of the island, known for its white sand and crystal-clear water. It's a great spot to relax, sunbathe, or snorkel away from the main crowds.
Mahana Point Cliff Jump & Surf Spot -
This is a popular spot that combines a restaurant and bar with an epic view of a renowned left-hand surf break.
The restaurant has platforms for cliff jumping charging a small fee per jump. This activity is best done at high tide for obvious reasons.
Zipline at Island Cove Resort -
You can ride a zipline that soars over the sparkling blue water, offering a rare and exciting perspective of the island's coastline.
Cliff Jumping at Blue Lagoon (Caution advised) -
A very popular spot for cliff jumping with platforms ranging up to 13m. Conditions are unpredictable and caution is strongly advised. The Mahana Point jump is often considered the safer and more accessible option, as it has a ladder for climbing back out.
Nusa Penida - MAP
Is renowned for its dramatic coastal cliffs, rugged terrain, and spectacular marine life. The island's highlights are often grouped into Western and Eastern routes, which are best explored on separate days due to the rough roads.
West Nusa Penida
The west side is home to the island's most famous and dramatic viewpoints.
๐ด Kelingking Beach (The T-Rex Cliff) -
Famous for its headland shaped like a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The view from the top is one of Indonesia's most photographed spots. You can descend the incredibly steep strenuous path to the pristine white-sand beach below but it is a challenging 45-minute hike back up.
Swimming is currently banned due to dangerous, strong currents.
๐ Angel's Billabong & Broken Beach (Pasih Uug)
These two stunning natural formations are located right next to each other.
Angel's Billabong - A natural, crystal-clear tidal infinity pool set in the volcanic rock right on the edge of the cliff.Safety Warning - Access to the pool is often roped off and swimming is highly discouraged, as rogue waves have tragically swept people out to sea.
Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) -
A spectacular circular cove where a massive natural arch has been carved out of the cliff face allowing the ocean water to flow in. You can walk around the arch for panoramic views. Note you cannot access the water or beach below.
Visit at low tide for the best views and calmer waters at Angel's Billabong.
๐ Crystal Bay -
One of the few beaches on the island known for calm, safe swimming and easy access (no steep stairs required). It's a popular spot for snorkeling and diving.
Relax on the soft white sand, swim or rent snorkeling gear to see the colorful marine life near the shore. It is also one of the best locations on the island for watching the sunset.
East Nusa Penida (Spectacular Beaches and Views)
The east side is equally impressive, known for its picture-perfect beaches and cliffside houses.
๐ Diamond Beach & Atuh Beach
These two dramatic beaches are separated by a single cliff and can be visited from the same parking area.
Diamond Beach -
Features towering white cliffs, turquoise water and an adventurous staircase carved into the cliff face for access. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents.
Atuh Beach -
A gorgeous crescent-shaped beach with a natural rock arch formation often considered a safer swimming spot than Diamond Beach, though care is still needed. It offers beach huts where you can buy food and drinks.
๐ก Rumah Pohon (Tree House) & Thousand Island Viewpoint -
Located near Diamond Beach, this spot offers sweeping views of a cluster of small islands (Pulau Seribu) soaring out of the turquoise water.
โฐ๏ธ Teletubbies Hill -
A scenic landscape of undulating, vivid green mounds and hills that resemble the setting of the children's show.
๐ง Peguyangan Waterfall (The Blue Stairs Hike)
While not a conventional waterfall this site is famous for a steep narrow staircase of blue metal stairs built into the side of a cliff that leads down to a sacred spring and temple by the ocean.
This is a pilgrimage site, so visitors must wear a sarong which can be rented and be prepared for a challenging descent and ascent.
๐ Snorkeling and Diving with Manta Rays -
Nusa Penida is one of the best places in the world to encounter majestic manta rays.
Book a snorkeling or diving tour to Manta Point (deeper, stronger currents) or Manta Bay (calmer, easier for snorkelers).
๐ต Motorbiking or Hiring a Driver
Renting a scooter is the most common way to explore, but be warned that many roads on Nusa Penida are rough, unpaved, and full of potholes. If you are not an experienced rider, it is highly recommended to hire a local driver for safety.
SURFING ๐ MAP
The Nusa Islands, particularly Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are famous among surfers for their consistent swells, clear water, and the stunning backdrop of the islands. Nusa Penida is generally not known for surf breaks.
Best Time to Surf
The surfing conditions are highly reliable and consistent, but the best time of year is during the Dry Season for the most consistent offshore wind.
Peak Season (Best Conditions) April to October.
This period brings consistent swells and the south-easterly trade winds, which are offshore (blowing from the land to the sea) for the main surf breaks on the north-west coast of Lembongan, resulting in clean, quality waves.
Off-Season (Fewer Crowds) November to March (Wet Season).
While the wind is often onshore during this time, creating less predictable conditions, you can still find excellent waves during calm periods, usually in the early mornings, and you'll encounter far fewer crowds.
Best Surf Breaks (Beaches)
All the main surf breaks are located off the north-west coast of Nusa Lembongan, near Jungut Batu Beach, and are accessible by paddling or a short "surf taxi" boat ride.
Playgrounds -
Beginner to Intermediate. The closest break to shore and the most user-friendly. A fun A-frame wave (breaks left and right) that is ideal for beginners to practice on the high tide, and intermediates to improve skills.
Lacerations -
Beginner-Intermediate to Advanced. Best known for being a fast, hollow, barreling right-hander over a sharp reef when the swell is big. However, on small swells and high tide, it softens up and is often used by surf schools for lessons.
Shipwrecks -
Intermediate to Advanced. The most famous and most consistent wave on the island. A fast, powerful right-hander that offers good walls for manoeuvres and will occasionally tube, best surfed at mid-tide.
Razors -
Beginner-Intermediate to Advanced. A long left-hand wave that offers long, friendly rides on smaller days (good for longboarders), but becomes very fast and hollow on bigger swells.
Ceningan Point / Mahana Point (Nusa Ceningan) -
Intermediate to Advanced. Located on Nusa Ceningan this is a consistent left-hand point break. It is more exposed, meaning it picks up more swell than the Lembongan breaks, making it a good option when Lembongan is small.
Board Hire and Lessons
Surfboards and lessons are easily available, especially along Jungut Batu Beach on Nusa Lembongan, where the main surf schools are located.
Lessons typically last 2 hours and include the board, rash vest, and instruction.
There are also comprehensive programs and advanced lessons.
Boards are available for hire from surf schools and shops in Jungut Batu.
Safety Note
The surf breaks are over coral reefs and currents can be strong, especially at high tide. It is highly recommended that beginners only surf at Playgrounds and Lacerations (when small) and always go with a local surf school or guide.
